Name: Saralinda
AIM: flavax32
Name: August O'Neil
Gender: Male
Species: human
Age: 50
Universe: 2k3 Cartoon
Time Period: Post episodes "April's Artifact" and "The Trouble with Augie"
History: "Uncle Augie" is a maverick anthropologist who has flown against the conventions of the academic community. As a graduate student and young professor, he made sure to publish high-quality research and lived a respectable--if extremely boring--life at Columbia University. This all changed after a chance encounter with Bigfoot on a camping trip. From then on, Dr. O'Neil sought to convince others that alternate nonhuman cultures were worth studying.
When he first expressed interest in exploring the paranormal and paranatural, his colleagues warned him it would end his professional career. Undaunted, August pursued his explorations of other dimensions, strange artifacts, and inhuman cultures. As a result, he lost institutional backing and became a laughingstock among "respectable" researchers. Things got bad; without a university or museum to support him, and without precious grant money, Augie found himself grounded. He lived for a time on skid row and even on the streets, spending all available money on his research and his efforts to prove himself to his colleagues and regain his standing as a respected scientist.
Unfortunately, this never worked out for him.
August worked on a series of merchant ships, earning enough money to sponsor a small independent dig in South America. When he discovered an artifact capable of interdimensional transport there, Augie fled this world and sought knowledge--and peace--in others.
Relationship with April: Augie is April's beloved if somewhat nutty uncle. He has a habit of disappearing and turning up again, and often needs her help to get out of scrapes--whether financial or otherwise. Still, he's always been the most prominent father-figure in her life and they have an affectionate bond.
Personality: Like many university-types, August can be a complete oddball with a single-minded pursuit of research. In other words, his social skills could use a little polish. He can also be fun-loving, enthusiastic, and adventuresome. He tends to speak quickly and to ramble; very few people ever get his very bizarre jokes. He is a natural storyteller and will go on forever if you don't stop him. He also enjoys dancing and has learned many Latin styles of dance in his travels.
Strengths: August is highly intelligent; he is a problem-solver and very focused. He can read and speak a number of languages, including several dead languages and two or three non-human tongues. He is loyal to his niece and will do anything to protect her, even though at times his own needs put her in danger. Still, he thinks this builds character and is therefore not all unhealthy for April. When he's thinking straight, Augie is actually quite talented at blending into foreign societies. He has a powerful sense of empathy and understanding of others.
Weaknesses: When August is absorbed in study and research he can be quite bumbling. He doesn't always recognize when he is in danger, which can also be trouble for those with him. His enthusiasm for the paranormal can sometimes blind him to the needs of others. He has no specialized fighting abilities, but isn't afraid to use his fists or his trusty pistol if needed.
Appearance: Tall, white hair and beard. Crinkly blue eyes and an easy smile. Weathered skin from his time outdoors. Occasional aches and pains.
